Central
City Park Extension
[
Atlanta, Georgia ]
The Central City Park extension provides a
unique urban open space in the midst of downtown Atlanta.
It will also serve to bring cultural life to the park in less
eternal forms such as concerts, plays, festivals, and happenings
of many kinds. It shall be adaptive to different uses on varying
occasions. For some it will be a place to pause and relax,
to reflect on the course of the events of the day. For others
it will be an arena in which to enjoy both live and filmed
entertainment.
Merchants will use the area for fashion shows and merchandise
promotions. Civic and community groups will be able to use
the area for a wide variety of functions, such as rallies,
puppet shows, and the filming of shows. Whatever the activity,
it is felt that the amphitheater and fountain will play important
roles in contributing to the excitement and abundance of activity
choices which will be enhanced by this sensually stimulating
environment. This will mean that life can return to the central
city after office hours through a series of well planned programs.
It is composed of 7 angular pools on different levels which
create a wide variety of natural effects such as straight
falls, cascades, and gushing of running water. Live plants
are placed at different levels to keep nature close. Behind
a wood deck stage which gives the impression of floating on
the large bottom pool, there are dressing rooms, mechanical
rooms, and storage facilities. The entrance to the performing
stage is located underneath a water fall. Although this section
of the park will have multiple levels. It will be easily accessible
by all including those in wheelchairs. The music of the waterfall
will drown the traffic sounds and create an intimate space
downtown. Although the extension will relate to the existing
part of the park through the cohesiveness of the use of similar
construction materials and plants, it will have a strong physical
form and identity of its own.
